What I would suggest is to try out http://www.bigwords.com. Type in keywords relating to electronic medical record and it'll search all the online textbook retailers and rental sites for you. So it'll find you books in relation to it but at a great price. It's helped me out tons of times. Good luck!

The biggest barrier we face in the emergence of electronic health records(EHR) is the fear people have of their information being somewhere out there for all to see. A web-based EHR needs to take the proper precautions to remain HIPPA complaint. Protected health information must be de-identified and anonymous. With these measures, data can be used to improve care, estimate the costs of care and support public health initiatives.

Agreed. Government and hackers will have a field day. The only way I would trust it is if everyone kept their own records on a password protected memory stick and carried it with them to doctors appointments to be updated. The only electronic files on a national data base should be things that the patient is allergic to.

No, but it will change the profession dramatically. There are too many places that still use paper records to worry too much about the EHR causing any particular upheaval at this point. Electronic records are proving to have some problems that are taking healthcare insitutions a while to iron out. The big difference in the future will be that in order to deal with medical records, you'll have to have a base of knowledge in computer science, where you didn't before. Records will still need to be dealt with, it will just be on computers, servers, disks and such instead of plain old "forms" on paper.

The problem with EMRs as they take double the amount of time to complete, and this has been well-documented to slow efficiency in many places such as ERs and clinics. Unfortunately, the software & systems have been developed mostly by non medical people and are really cumbersome and horribly time consuming. They will become a reality however. Whether fraud is reduced or not (and it is not all that common) is debatable. People who commit fraud knowingly are very resourceful. EMRs are good for tracking drug usage, and making past medical records more legible and eventually more accessible.

Yes, to a certain extent. The computer will do the coding & an experienced C & B will audit them. Obviously, there will be a need for fewer B & Coders. ANd its just not 5 years down the road, for many the transition has already taken place. My clinic uses no paper at all.

Yes, that's right. You have to request again to see your EMR. Yes also, you have the right to see it because such record is yours. I believe this is guaranteed by law…. can't give the exact law because i dunno where you are… Sorry for that. Goodluck!!!
