I started hiking with my husband about 8 months ago – I only wanted to improve my fitness, I was not trying to lose weight. We started off with easy 2 mile trails 2-3 times a week and worked up to difficult 4-6 mile trails 5 times a week. I noticed a definite improvement in muscle tone and endurance within a month. This really worked for us because we kept each other motivated (when I felt lazy, he pushed me to go and vice versa), we ended up truly enjoying the time spent outdoors, and we have access to 4 great parks within 10 miles.

As for foods to avoid, I make an effort to rarely, if ever, eat processed food or fast food (maybe once every 2 or 3 months). It makes a huge difference in your skin, energy levels, and overall feeling of health.

people run to stay in shape and to reach an ideal body weight. Studies show that a combination of diet and exercise is the most effective way to lose weight, as it triggers a loss of body fat and a proportional increase of lean tissue. Running, a rigorous cardiovascular exercise, allows a person to burn an average of 100 calories per each mile he or she runs. Other popular activities, such as biking and walking, only burn a fraction of those calories in the same amount of time. While the average human being burns about 2000-2500 calories a day by simply existing, running 5 miles a day can burn an additional 500 calories, making it a legitimate way to lose weight. Furthermore, running is an easily accessible activity– with a decent pair of sneakers and some determination, anyone can run.
Surprisingly, how fast a person runs has little effect on the number of calories he or she will burn. The most important factor is weight. For example, a 220-pound person running an eight-minute mile burns 150 calories, while a 120-pound person running at the same pace burns only 82. Every person’s body requires an excess of 3500 calories in order to gain a pound or a deficit of 3500 calories in order to lose a pound. Thus, 180-pound person who runs 5 miles each day will lose about 5 pounds a month. However, as his or her weight goes down, he or she will burn fewer calories per mile. Eventually, a runner’s weight will stabilize. When this will happen depends on how much the runner eats and how far he or she runs. Most runners lose weight effortlessly at first, but eventually, their weight stops declining and reaches a plateau. In order to continue to lose weight, some serious runners will intensify their workouts, as extra weight will only slow them down. Otherwise, recreational runners can maintain their lower body weight by continuing to run consistently
Running and diet. Running does not increase appetite. In fact, exercise tends to diminish it, acting as a suppressant. Runners pay close attention to their diets, as most runners try to maintain a balanced diet that is low in fat. Carbohydrates are especially important for runners; muscles need the glycogen that comes from them in order to produce energy. Thus, Carbohydrates should supply about 60 % of food intake among runners. In order to boost energy, some runners practice carbo loading before big races. Several days before competition, they eat foods high in complex carbohydrates, such as pastas and potatoes, in order to increase their supply of glycogen during the race. However, carbo-loading is not the most effective way to enhance a performance, as it is probably better to eat normally and maintain a balanced diet.

However, muscles do not work well on a fatty diet, and intake of fat should not exceed 25%. Aside from carbohydrates, proteins can also supply energy and should comprise about 15% of calories in a runner’s diet. Most importantly, fluids are necessary in allowing blood to transfer glucose to muscles and in flushing out metabolic waste.

No. I would join a gym so I could converse with my personal trainer face to face. Over the Internet is just too impersonal.

You dont drain the system with medical costs and lack of production from being over weight and having diseases.

Short term… your not taking up as many resources.

You make an excellent point. Many many people are willing to do extremely unhealthy things to be thin. (read the question above yours in D&F to see a good example)

Ultimately, education is going to be the answer but in a much wider spread than people realize. Every major woman's magizine has a weight lose or exercise related article each month, but many of them don't give very accurate information or give conflicting information. That needs to stop before the problem can be fixed. A magizine or the internet is no substitute for real professional advice (as I'm sure you know)

I hate to jump on this bandwagon but people need to know and accept that being thin and being healthy aren't the same thing. And just because a woman is a size ten doesn't mean she's overweight. Young kids are so impressionable and the messages they are bombarded with each day scares me. There are so many body types, not every woman is going to be pencil thin, not every woman will have J. Lo curves.

The way people think about body type and health has to change for any real reversal of this disgusting "Thin at all costs" mind set.

Keeping up your health involves eating a healthy diet of all 5 food groups every day. The big key is that you feed your person every day.

If my hunger level is 'grumbly' or below I eat (in the following order)

    Green Salad
    Fruit Salad
    Cheeseburger

If my level is 'comfortably full' or higher I eat (in the listed order)

    Lasagna
    Fruit Salad

Then if I'm still not "completely full" I supplement with the cereal from Chip's Grabbing machine.

You can also groom to raise your health 1 point per day. Put one of the toiletry items in your house (i.e. a hairbrush) and click on it. On the menu that pops up in the lower left hand corner you will see a 'groom' option. Click that and it will pop up a window that says grooming contributes to good health and it will raise your health 1 point. It can be done only once per day.

A lot of this is common sense and I don't think you should ask us to do your coursework for you.
