Osteoporosis is usually thought of as a “woman’s disease” but according to an article in USA Today approximately one in five men are affected by it, too (Your Health).

Osteoporosis is another name for bone density loss. It is estimated that one half of all women will suffer bone loss of the period of a life time. While osteoporosis can be deadly in women it is also dangerous for men.

“Six percent of all men over 50 are destined to break a hip, says the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. And studies show that when they do, they are more likely than women to die or require long-term care.” (Ibid.)

What Causes Osteoporosis?

The causes of osteoporosis are believed to be lowered hormones of estrogen and testosterone in both women and men, along with nutritional and dietary factors.

According to the National Institutes of Health, Office of Dietary Supplements, “Some evidence suggests that magnesium deficiency may be an additional risk factor for postmenopausal osteoporosis. This may be due to the fact that magnesium alters calcium metabolism and the hormones that regulate calcium. Several human studies have suggested that magnesium supplementation may improve bone mineral density to a greater degree than a lower magnesium intake. Diets that provide recommended levels of magnesium are beneficial for bone health (Kelly’s World Famous).”

As Americans, our diets are insufficient. Our soil has been depleted by modern farming methods and so, even the best diet does not supply all the nutrients we need and the necessary trace minerals from the soil.

What are the costs of Osteoporosis?

The total annual medical bill for fractures due to osteoporosis is around “$30 billion” (Ibid.). This figure does not account for the costs of care for those who are permanently incapacitated. And, it is not possible to put a monetary figure on the cost of death caused as a result of osteoporosis.

What Should You Do?

To protect the health of the bones and health, in general, it is wise to avoid excessive alcohol consumption, smoking and the drinking of sodas. Pharmaceutical medications can damage the bones, as well.

Get plenty of exercise. Stronger muscles help support the bones and overall health.

Supplement your diet with a balance of magnesium, calcium and Vitamin D like Peter Gillham’s Osteo Calm. Magnesium is required for over 300 of the body’s biochemical processes. Without Magnesium, your body cannot convert Calcium and Vitamin D into bone tissue.

    Hiya Valerie B.
It strikes me strange, but men will while hiding behind the avatar pose questions about their health through this forum, but will not go within ten miles of a doctor's office. You are right Kisses, men are goofballs, they also have them that makes them act real foolish when it comes to their health.
Oh, I have read many question that crack me up, and still more that I think, dude, get professional help or else nasty things will happen. I don't normally answer guy's questions about health because they simply won't listen; I didn't and it almost cost me me life. In that a few years ago, I began to fall out, pass out, hadn't felt good for a few years, I finally out of fear, went into the ER and discovered I was having congestive heart failure, had a silent heart attack sometime in the past, the also found I had lung disease [was a smoker-too late damage done, COPD] and that I had cancer; 11 months and $850,000. later and I'm good to go, sort of.[cancer is in remission]
DUDES reading this answer, go to the frigging doctor if your not right, don't come here looking for a miracle because it just ain't gonna happen. Anyone here can claim to be a doc, but when you go see one, you know your getting the real thing.
Please excuse me Valerie B for using your question to try to help those numb nuts out there. But their questions are funny though. Just shows you how much most men are not aware of the own bodies outside of there junk and about that they know two things, hard and soft. LOL. What idiots. Take care.

LOL, but often the ones who ask such silly questions are also too dumb to find the right category! I have seen so many penis questions in the Yahoo section and the Pregnancy/Parenting section too

No other place to ask, there really needs to be another subcategory called male sexuality so all the sex questions can be asked there. Unfortunately, some serious male health issues get hidden in all the "is my penis big enough" questions.

You must realize that those men in the fitness magazines were hand picked from thousands of candidates. The requirements for those men are quite stringent. It is expected that they have a certain degree of muscularity and have the basic body structure that will show off a well developed physique. Have you ever noticed that when a new piece of exercise equipment is introduced it is presented with a male model with fantastic muscular development. We are supposed to believe that he got that way using only this new, just introduced, piece of equipment, when in reality it took him several years to acquire his physique. So… can you look like one of those guys? The answer is yes, if you have the dedication, time and persistence that it took them to look as good as they do.
What you ask depends on your starting point. How muscular are you now? What is your body composition as far as structure, muscularity and fat? Is your weight in proportion with your height?
Are you healthy enough to undertake a strenuous exercise program? Do you need to add some muscle bulk before you start more aerobic exercises to get the cut, hard body look? To give you a meaningful answer that applies to your situation these factors would have to be known. I could suggest you do these exercises and eat that supplement but it would only be a shot in the dark. Sorry but give more details and I would be happy to give you suggestions.
